"The Gaze - Winter Morning"

is a testament to the highest artistic precision and patience. A total of 14 wafer-thin glazes were applied one over another on a classical chalk ground using an elaborate mixed technique of tempera and oil. This masterful layering gives the painting extraordinary depth and a luminosity rarely found in contemporary art.

At its center is a robin, whose gaze literally fixates the viewer. The masterful perspectival execution of the eye creates a fascinating effect: one cannot escape this gaze – no matter from which viewpoint one looks at the painting, the bird maintains contact. The fine glazes give the plumage an almost three-dimensional tactile quality, making it appear almost alive in the stillness of a waking winter day. The background – a misty landscape in the first morning light – forms a gentle, atmospheric contrast to the sharpness of the foreground. The warm, golden light of the sunrise breaks in the frozen structures and in the plumage, lending the cool morning a deep, hopeful warmth.
