The Vanen War

This pencil drawing is a profound reinterpretation of the mythological war between the Aesir and the Vanir. It stages this conflict as a fundamental ordeal for our modern age: man, who in his hubris elevates himself as a god (Aesir) over nature, against the Vanir as guardians of the natural order.

The Duality of the Conflict:
The Vanir (The Force of Nature): On the left side, a naked woman is enthroned – majestic, untamed, and deeply rooted in the animal world. Around her gather the primal forces of the earth: lion, elephant, gorilla, crocodile, and a massive snake. She embodies organic consciousness, needing no artificial armor because she is life itself.
The Aesir (Technological Hubris): On the right side stands the man. He represents man, who plays at being a god. Behind him, his world rises: a technologically advanced megacity, fighter jets, and galleys. He wields a long staff, with which he tries to direct or subjugate the natural order.

The Battle of Symbols:
A bird of prey hovers in the air – observer or messenger – while on the ground, symbols of civilization (books, wheels) push into the flesh of nature (the snake). It is a war for supremacy on this planet.

The Precarious Balance:
The composition shows enormous tension. The Vanir stands on a kind of narrow ridge or rope held by the man – a sign of how much modern technology believes it has nature in its hands, while simultaneously being dependent on its existence.

The Dominance of Stasis:
The Vanir stands on the left side in almost statuesque calm on just one leg, comparable to the firm grace of a crane or stork. Despite this minimal standing surface, she appears absolutely unshakable and stable. In extreme contrast, the man on the right side has to exert his entire physical strength; he strains against her with both arms and full bodily effort. This clarifies the true hierarchy: nature is the mightier, more powerful entity, while man has to toil to the point of exhaustion just to contend with her silent presence.
