Subject:
Romina, a female gorilla at Bristol Zoo Gardens, underwent a groundbreaking eye operation in 2002 after being blind for most of her life — becoming the first adult gorilla in Europe to do so. Her congenital cataracts were removed and replaced with artificial lenses. After a second procedure, she was able to see clearly for the very first time. The expression of her first moment of sight is pure, unfiltered, and deeply moving — a moment filled with curiosity and discovery, much like that of a child. In 2005, following her recovery, she gave birth to her first offspring.
