Description
This approximately A4-sized watercolor, embellished with magnificent gold leaf, is a profound exploration of the balance between mind and matter. In a dreamlike scenery, symbols of civilization and everyday life—a passenger airplane, a rubber duck, historical sheet music, and modern ecstasy pills—float seemingly weightlessly.
The central element is a robin, simultaneously taking the form of an ancient hot air balloon. Above all, a floating boulder with the ancient Greek inscription "NOUS" (intellect, mind) is enthroned. This is the term for the intellect or pure spirit. Amidst the fleeting "suspended particles" of life, the mind forms a solid, albeit floating, anchor point. The work raises the question of how, through the power of the mind, we maintain control over the sensory overload and artificial states of our time.
The gold leaf imbues this philosophical question with a timeless, almost sacred dignity. It is a work about the sovereignty of thought in a world constantly in flux.
